3December Challenge Day 27

Day 27: Legoalways wanted to make this, but never had enough 1s, 2s or flat 8s

    Lego helix

Heres the normal map i used for the logo on each block, incase anyone needs it.

also dug up this old program i'd used a few years back when they launched it -
Lego Digital Designer
Free Download - http://ldd.lego.com/en-us/
It lets you build whatever you like.. and then order the parts online. Earlier on there was no way to get a obj out of it so i gave up on it immediately..
but now you can get Leo CAD and that opens the lego file and saves as obj etc.
Free Download - http://www.leocad.org/
Anyway I used it to create something last night.. was fun doing this after a long time. Its a bit of a cheat for the 3December entry, hence not my official entry. Just something I played with last night.

You can see it below.. needs some smoothing and finishing.. the textures don't export apparently.

Good Morning ICICI CIB login doesnt work

So after much deliberation we got a current account for our studio at ICICI Bank.
The Login process on the old corporate site was a nightmare in itself.. requiring one to remember ..
1) an alphanumeric corporate id (16 digits)
2) a username
3) a login password
and post login you need
4) a transaction password
via GIPHY

After a year we basically got the hang of it. I started using the android app from the beginning, since it atleast remembers the first 2 things in that list, and i just need to remember the two passwords now.
via GIPHY

Welcome to Saturday, December 18, 2016.

I attempt to login to the app, it says my password has been reset.
I attempt to use the website to reset the password and it says "password has been reset, now print out this paper, sign it and mail it to us"
via GIPHY

After jumping through the hoops I realize its the damn weekend. So as usual nothings going to happen today.

So great.

via GIPHY

Monday 19th December,
they tell me to wait till the end of the working day for my new password to be active.

At 6pm I get a mail telling me that the account has been migrated to a new system.. ICICI CIB.
So i need to go to this new page and reset my password from there.

This time my username is mashed with my corporate id to create a
24 digit alphanumeric monstrosity.
via GIPHY

Fine. Am in notepad land as it is.

So as I use this new "username" and  mobile number OTP to rest the password... I'm starting to see the end of the tunnel.
via GIPHY

I get an sms confirmation that the password is reset, go ahead and login.

Login fails.
Both on the new CIB site as well as the old one.

Tuesday 20th December, So great. I have a business to run in a few hrs.. people to pay before they go off on vacations..
and no online banking.. in the days of demonetization.

ID Card for Stray Dog Feeders

I have the power!!
(To flash this card if someone messes with me when am feeding the kids)

Why bother? - Street dog feeding reduces man-dog conflict, and makes it easier to catch the dogs for birth control and vaccination
Note: anyone can feed a stray animal.
No one can stop you from doing so(even if you don't have this card). Its the law.
How to get your own?Step 1 - fill out a form.

Step 4 - wait.. like for a bit

Finally tried Blender's Grease Pencil

This isn't a new feature in Blender.. its just something I ignored for a long time.. finally decided to give it a whirl today, and it does not disappoint! Originally meant as a quick way to make notes or annotate a 3d model this tool has gone on to more advanced and glorious things :)

The tools are much more refined since when I first tried the grease pencil years back.. now it even has animation capabilities.. with onion skinning!!
Aaand its pressure sensitive with my wacom!

Heres a quick gif of my first animated clip with blender grease pencil..

and heres a screengrab of the animation in blender.. with onionskins.. and wait for it.. thats right you can fly around it because all these lines are 3d objects!!

World of Warcraft: Legion Contest

Haven't taken part in a cg challenge in a while, so when this popped up I found my self saying..

Lets have a go at it

https://forum.sketchfab.com/t/lets-have-a-go-at-it/9554
(see the forum thread for the work in progress)

Its sort of a fanart contest based on the release of World of Warcraft “Legion”

Prizes include an Oculus Rift, The Art of Blizzard Entertainment books, WoW: Legion T-shirts, Sketchbooks, Amazon Gift cards and more. Enjoy! More details here
heres my work so far..

I started with the idea of doing a mini Wandering Isle
(turtle with a forest/cabin on its shell)..
sketches:

Got a lot of great inputs from @dark_minaz
the turtle in my sketch was looking too cute.. less legion.. so after looking at several refrences of the game, happened on the idea of making it a dead/skeletal part of a lair.. ie: an environment that grew around the giant carcass of a turtle..

anyway looked at some refrences of turtle bones and skulls ..
and finally started modelling this snapping turtle skull.. will add horns etc and make it more legion

some layout progress... actually starting to feel satisfied with it a bit.. now to WoW it up.. with glowy cracks and green/blue goop and flames..

Adobe Animate CC - Before you upgrade

In the past whenever a new version of an Adobe program came along, I'd keep the old one still installed as a backup..

With Adobe CC I was a bit nervous..
Turns out you can still do the whole "keep the previous version" thing.

If your curious about the changes in Adobe Animate CC, here's a detailed video by Jazza

Earth Day - Quick Blender Model

On my morning check in, facebook told me that it was Earth Day.. A few minutes later I had the idea for a quick model.. based on an old earth day 2d artwork I'd seen before on this page (the gorgeous one called "2015! | Divine Organic").

I omitted the flowers and intentional symmetry of the original 2d artwork .. and went a little more organic with my composition.

Decided to combine the simplicity of png images on multiple 3d panes.. and then sketchfab.com 's easy to use lighting and post processing effects. Technically the globe and the text are the only 3d models in this file. Anyway I had a pretty busy day at work, and could only spare a few minutes for this quick side project.

What did we leave behind on the Moon

The following Globe displays the approximate locations of various artefacts we left behind on the Moon. Its by no means the entire list, to see the full list, please refer to this document  the “Catalogue of Manmade Material on the Moon” (pdf) compiled by NASA’s History Program Office.

I've based the locations on the map created by STEVEN PESTANA over at https://anthropoceneacolyte.wordpress.com/2016/02/22/lunar-artifacts-map/ with a few additions by me from recent times.. ok just the Indian mission(location not accurate).

Assigning multiple drives to Steam on Linux

So I moved one of my work machines home and since i don't really need any of the windows applications i permanently switched over to the Ubuntu installation(was a dual boot setup).

Now a few months later i need some extra space for my Steam games. So decided to install them on the old windows partition. Those of you who are in the same boat already know that NTFS partitions(or most non ext4 partitions) don't auto mount.. so heres a culmination of my figuring out how to do that..
..and get Steam to use the NTFS partition as the directory for downloading and installing games.
I believe that this can also be used to mount external hard drives.. though you'll need to leave them plugged in at all times to avoid problems.

Note: The instructions below was culled from several forum posts, which will be mentioned and linked at the end.

1) Hit Ctrl – Alt – T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When terminal opens, run the commands below to view all partitions on your system. The drive should already be attached to your Ubuntu machine.
sudo blkid
you should see something like this
in my case I need to automount the two NTFS drives named "ReactorCore" and "Rehoboth" so from now on wherever you see those names, replace them with your drive labels

2) You need to note down the UUID(Drive Id)
in my case its 10B062CCB062B83C for Reactorcore and 7E02626002621E01 for Rehoboth
(you can drag to select and copy it out of the terminal and into a notepad or wherever)

3) Go back to the Terminal and run
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
this opens the fstab file.
which should look like this without any entries for your ntfs partitions

Scroll to the bottom and add the following entries for your drives

UUID=10B062CCB062B83C /mnt/reactor ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0

Note: the UUID is what tells linux which drive to mount, and the name "reactor" is the name it will show up under.. it can be anything you like.

So my fstab file now looks like this:

4) Save the file and close it. Terminal may have some messages, its ok.. either close that terminal and start a new one or continue in the same.

5) After that, run the commands below to create the mount point you specified in the fstab file.
sudo mkdir /mnt/reactor

In my case i did this again for the second drive "rehoboth" as well

6) Make yourself "owner" of the mount point by running the commands below
sudo chown chaitanyak /mnt/reactor

Replace "chaitanyak" with your username, and "reactor" with your mount name

again, do this for all the drives you are mounting.

7) Restart your computer and go to /mnt to access the drives.

you can drag them to the side panel to create bookmarks for easier access

8) Launch Steam, in the top menu click "steam" and go to settings
now on the side menu click "downloads"
and you'll see the "Steam Library Folders"  button
Click it

9) now you see this.. a list of the folders on various drives.. in your case it will probably just be the first one..

click the "Add Library Folder" to add one of your newly added drives..
which will show up under "mnt" as seen below

select the drive and click "new folder"

that creates the folder.. now back in the folder list, you can right click and set it as the default one.

Thats it! happy gaming!
